19.05.2011

Turkish Airlines was a nice experience apart from the fact that there was some delay on arriving in Brussels. Guy had monitored the arrival time before heading to the airport and therefore didn’t arrive there and wait for too long. A two hour nap in the afternoon enabled me to vaguely unpack and pack to be ready to leave the flat bright (not quite) and early (definitely) to travel to London on Saturday. Guy dropped me at the station in Brussels and Alain welcomed me at the station in London. It was nice being able to celebrate Sébastien’s second birthday with Alain and Melinda, and 8 of their RSA friends (I knew almost all of them). Sébastien is too cute and cheeky. Although he has no problem with pronouncing Rs in some words, Granny became Ganny, which I quite like! In a few days, he easily switches from “come Ganny” to “viens Ganny”. Melinda and Alain have also taught him to say “s’il vous plaît” and “merci”. It takes practice at times to figure out what he says, but he is nicely on his way to become a bilingual little fellow. On Wednesday, I met Alain in front of his new office (a throw of stone from the Liverpool train / tube station) and he took me out for lunch before I headed back to St Pancras. There was actually less delay coming back from Istanbul than driving from the Midi Station to our flat at 22h30 on Wednesday: some tunnels were closed for maintenance and the traffic was as bad as peak hour traffic going from Bryanston to OR Tambo airport… took us nearly one hour!

Back in Brussels has been a matter of finishing unpacking properly; doing a bit of grocery shopping with Guy, sorting out bits and pieces (washing & ironing) and going for walks. On Saturday morning, we drove to Liège for the weekend as I had seen neither Guy’s nor my mom yet. My brother and sisters have shifted Mother’s Day by one week because of me (!) and we all met at one of my sisters’ place for dinner on Sunday. It was very nice to see everyone “in one go”. There, my sister Brigitte confirmed that she had her tickets to come to RSA with her boyfriend for Christmas and New Year. Thanks to Nathalie and Daryll who will come with, accommodation has been booked in the Kruger Park for 3 nights early January.

Before coming back to Brussels on Monday, we popped by a travel agent and booked our sea sun week all inclusive Tunisia. We are leaving on the 30th May, back very late on the 6th June. Hotel looks good on the Internet. Will see when we get there… And again we got stuck in the traffic on our way back to the flat: some road works reducing the number of lanes on the highway leaving Liège, but then it was peak traffic hour.

That’s all for now!

Nearly 3 weeks later! - Presque 3 semaines plus tard !

Those three weeks were partly marked with a “growing patience” factor. Guy waited for his RSA contact to confirm when he would come to Belgium for a while before he could have his business trip to Senegal booked by his client. For an unknown reason, the RSA contact never confirmed his trip and, thereafter, it took a while for his Senegalese client’s secretary to confirm the flight booking and to send the e-ticket which was received late afternoon on the day prior Guy’s departure!
In the meantime, we managed to book a last minute trip to Djerba – Tunisia – so that we can enjoy a lazy week on the beach. If it ended up being easy enough to confirm and pay the trip, the travel agent took a while to let me know that she had received the documents we need to be able to travel!

As a matter of fact, Guy comes back from Dakar at 5h20 am on Saturday and we fly off to Djerba at 7h20 on Sunday!

We didn’t do much during those weeks, partly because the weather was not great at all, except for walking around either in Liège or Brussels, visiting Guy’s mom, my mom, some friends for a drink.

Guy left on Thursday and, on Friday, I went on a shopping spree in Brussels. It was nice doing that on my own… On Saturday, I got busy spring cleaning the flat, and then went for an hour long walk before ironing till late; fitting lunch and dinner in between all these activities. When the day was over, I was grateful for the fact that I have someone helping me with that workload in Johannesburg.

During the previous weekends, I went to church around Liège, but yesterday I went to church in Brussels where I was welcomed by some people I had met last year and the years before. I got invited for lunch by the pastor’s wife who had invited me in the same circumstances two years ago. It was very nice spending some time with Dawn and Steve and their 4 children aged between 2 and 7!

What’s up next?
Tomorrow, I am going to Liège till Thursday. I am meeting someone for lunch tomorrow and going to Michelle and Do for dinner. On Wednesday, I am having dinner at my sister Brigitte’s place and, on Thursday, I am will be visiting my mom before having dinner at my brother’s place and driving back to Brussels.

Soon after our trip to Tunisia, Guy and I will be driving to the South of France when Alain, Melinda and Sébastien will join us on the 25th June. We will spend 10 days visiting the South of France before going home separately.

Guess what? There is a 10 days gap during which I don’t know what will happen before I hop on the Eurostar again to go to London from the 21st July till the 26th… Might be able to post some updates and photos then!

19.05.2010

Two weeks and a few days ago I landed in Paris around 6.00 am. It took me a while to go through immigration and collect my luggage. That done, it was mad rush to catch my connecting high speed train from Paris to Brussels where Guy was waiting for me on the platform. He had come by tram; therefore we both took the tram to go back to our flat (much easier than using the car and finding a parking spot at that peak traffic hour).

The following day, we drove to Guy’s mom in Liège where we had lunch. From there, we went and visited my mom in the old age home where she stays; and from there we drove to my sister’s Brigitte’s place for dinner. Her son Nicolas and her boyfriend Christian were there too.

Thursday saw us driving back to Brussels as I was to hop on the Eurostar to London on Friday morning. Tram, Eurostar, regional train took me to the heart of the city where Alain’s office is located. I dropped my luggage with him and crossed the Millennium Bridge to go and visit the Tate Museum for an hour or so before going back to Alain’s office where Melinda and Sébastien were to meet us for lunch. It was Sébastien’s first birthday and he was ordered his first meal from the kiddies’ menu. After lunch, it was back to work for Alain & back home for the rest of us. At that stage, the weather was still enjoyable, but cool. It got worse on Saturday and Sunday!

Sébastien’s birthday party took place on Saturday. In fact, it was a combined birthday party with three of Sébastien’s friends who were also turning one in May. Each family had organised food and drinks to share and invited their own friends. Melinda baked and decorated a great number 1shaped kiddie friendly (very low in sugar) cake. Very nice indeed! The party over, the four families tackled the task of clearing/cleaning the hall they had all decorated together a few hours earlier. That done, with Alain & Mel’s friends, we went for a last drink in a pub. Joseph’s parents came to fetch Melinda, the food and cake before the party; Mike took her back with all the bits and pieces that needed to go home, stayed for a drink, then for dinner.

Sébastien seemed to like opening his birthday presents although he got stuck with playing with the one before opening the other…

On Sunday, we went to Holy Trinity Brompton for their 9.30 service and from there we went to a very nice restaurant for a traditional Sunday roast.

Monday saw Melinda, Sébastien and I heading to Westfield shopping centre. I went on a shopping spree at Mark & Spencer where trousers are still available in three leg lengths; the shorter one fitting me nicely! On Tuesday, Melinda took Sébastien to the North Acton Methodist church where a playgroup is organised from 10.00 till 12.00 and I had the opportunity to meet again some of the moms and kids who were at the party on Saturday. Unfortunately, the heating system was out of order and the church hall was very very cold, but the kids and their moms didn’t mind.

On Wednesday, suitcase packed, we headed to Alain’s office so that we could all have a last lunch together before my going back to Brussels late afternoon.

Thursday and Friday were for grocery shopping, flat cleaning, doing loads of washing and ironing (a bit of a challenge to dry up the clothes as it was rainy outside).

The weekend took us to Liège where we met some friends for dinner on Saturday night: the Quoilin. Philippe still works for the company Guy used to work for and he spent some 18 months in Johannesburg with his family. Unfortunately, he was in the Emirates on business, but we had a good time catching up on the news with his wife Martine and two of their three children.

I enjoyed having the opportunity of going to church on Sunday and being welcome by the people I meet there every year. In the afternoon, Guy and I went to my mom’s place and spent some time with her before taking her to my brother’s place where he and his wife had organised a very nice (belated) mother’s day dinner. My three sisters were there.

More shopping with my mother-in-law in the morning and visit to a recently opened shopping centre in the afternoon on Monday and back to Brussels on Tuesday afternoon.

Today was admin day for Guy who had to run around to re-register the car we are using; a formality that has to be done every six months! Luckily, it all went rather smoothly. What is not really going smoothly is the fact that Guy is to go to Senegal for a week, but he needs to know when some businessman from RSA will come and visit some Belgian company before he flies off. The wait and see is a bit annoying…

We took a long walk in our area this afternoon.

A very nice one indeed: one hour during which we could see planes taking off from the Brussels airport close by and trains passing us in both directions.

When Guy is able to set his programme, I will organise mine; however, I am already trying to organise a trip to London towards the end of July…

02.08.2009

I cannot believe that the last time I managed to update my blog was when I was in London a good five weeks ago! Lots happened since then!

On the Saturday following my return from London, we attended Jean-Paul’s sixtieth birthday party. Jean-Paul was working with Guy in Botswana a long while ago. It was nice being able to celebrate with him and his family; and also to meet some other friends who were working for the same company.

On Monday, the new dishwasher got delivered and installed. It has been tested since: very silent and efficient even with the cutlery; which is a bonus.

On Tuesday, we went on a road trip to France. The sky was partly cloudy and the temperatures below the season average: 19° as we were heading to Normandy and Brittany. Our first stop was Honfleur, a very pretty town bordering the Channel. From there, we travelled to Trouville and Deauville on the way to Cabourg where we spent the night. The following day, we stopped in Bayeux before stopping here and there along the Utah and Omaha beach where the Americans had landed to rescue the allied forces during the second world war. We spent the night in Cherbourg after seeing the Mont St-Michel from afar. We carried on visiting the area (Dinan, Dinard, St. Briac…) on the following day and spent the night in Rennes. We started heading back to Belgium on the following day and stopped in Caen for the night. On the way back, both Guy and I got very upset with a town called Rouen which has now been banned from our French itinerary as we got so lost there for the second time in a few years. Our last stop in France was in Lille where we did some shopping in Guy’s favourite supermarket: Auchan (cheese, wine).

A few days later, Guy dropped me at my sister’s Brigitte's place. I had booked some a night at the “Domaine des Hautes Fagnes” for us. The weather was not great at all, but we didn’t care as we got treated like queens and pampered (facial, mani-pedicure, etc.) for two days. A bit of shopping on the following day before Guy came to pick me up.

The following weekend saw us driving to Frankfurt via the Rhine valley where many castles had been built in the past. We spent two nights in Frankfurt before heading back to Belgium via a very beautiful city called Heidelberg. We could have stayed somewhat longer, but the weather was not great at all; which prompted our leaving as we had no accommodation booked anyway.

A few days later, Alain, Melinda and Sébastien arrived from London so that Sébastien could be introduced to family and friends. It was very nice to have them stay in Belgium for the week-end. They arrived late on Thursday night and Alain took an early Eurostar to go back to work on Monday. Melinda, I and the baby took the mid-day train. I spent 4 blessed days in London with them.

Now is time for cleaning, washing, ironing and packing to fly back to RSA on Monday night.

The last time I checked, in three months, we had been driving for more than 6,000 km with the C5, plus the Eurostar to London, plus a few in the tube or the Brussels metro, plus a trip to Turkey by plane and bus! It might be time to go home and settle down.

18.06.2009 - From London - De Londres

What’s up? The week Guy and I spent in Turkey was great. We were surprised by the traffic jam going to the airport at 4h00 in the morning. Luckily our taxi driver knew the trick and dropped us at the “arrivals” to jump the queue.

Our package was Ultra All Inclusive and included free of charge access to various bars all day long, buffets for breakfast, lunch & dinner, but we could have one “à la carte” dinner in one of their restaurants. We chose the “fish restaurant” on the beach. Very romantic as we had the opportunity to admire the rising of an orange moon. Strange thing though is that they ran out of vanilla ice cream and organised fruit salad with chocolate ice cream. Didn’t like the combination that much.

We had access to their mini fitness centre, hammam and sauna. I made use of their bicycle every day for some 15-20 min then enjoyed hammam before going into the pool. We had some difficulties having the room air-conditioning sorted out, but got there eventually. We spend most of our time on the beach, or walking to the shopping area of the village to buy cherries. We only went once to the closest small town.

We got back in Brussels on Saturday afternoon and got prompting down to earth at 2h00 AM on Sunday morning when our 33 year old dishwasher gave up; nothing too serious in ways. Good thing is that it happened when we were in the flat, bad thing is we were sleeping. Got awoken by door bell, thought of a mistake or possible intruder trying to find out if we were in. Bell rings again so decided to go and open. Bare footed I headed to the door and, oopsy, there is water in the passage. And there is the lady caretaker and her big friendly smile accompanied by some firemen saying that it is raining in the flat beneath us… Makes sense, the kitchen is completely flooded and so is part of the passage. Cause unknown at this point in time. Some mopping later with the help of the caretaker, 4 firemen, we were “dry again”. Poor lady under us is without electricity because our water ran through her kitchen light fitting. I went to church this morning and enjoyed to service and the fellowship, during that time, Guy ironed his shirts (I had sorted a wash before going to bed). We were without cold water in the kitchen for part of the day today till we got to move and investigate the dishwasher: the second the main valve is on we get the Vic Falls at the back of the machine… Guy is not a big fan of dishwashing; therefore getting a dishwasher was on our Monday shopping list, together with dealing with the body corporate with regard to the insurance, finishing unpacking, tidying and packing again to go to London on Tuesday.

I am having a great blessed time in London with my daughter-in-law Melinda and her new-born baby Sébastien, (remember the one who is too cute for words?) and Alain when he comes back from work. Occasionally bottle feeding, nappy changing, cuddling, taking pictures and videos, cuddling again, staring at his funny faces. Pity I am going back to Brussels tomorrow.
